TTT1833 August 20 Imigration

At a time when many cities and counties across the U.S. are drawing a clear line of separation between local law enforcement and immigrant enforcement officials (I.C.E.), Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek is taking a different direction. He has ordered staff of the Hennepin County jail to inform I.C.E. of undocumented immigrants in its custody and provide notification of their date and time of release. As a result, many undocumented immigrants have been taken directly into custody by border enforcement officials and, in some cases, deported. In response, Hennepin County Commissioner Marion Greene introduced legislation to establish a legal defense fund for undocumented residents with a priority on those in jail. The idea has caught on. St. Paul City Council members and Ramsey County commissioners are considering similar measures. Commissioner Greene joins TruthToTell to discuss the challenges facing undocumented immigrants, Hennepin County’s response, and other issues she is working on as a member of the one of the most powerful and least understood branches of local government.

TTT1804 January 22 Haiti-Puerto Rico

It’s one thing for President Trump to demean countries where black and brown people are the majority, but even more disturbing is the number of Americans who seem to agree. How do we talk about nations that clearly have challenges, but also have rich cultures, resilient people, and all too often a history of exploitation by colonial powers, including the United States. For starters, TruthToTell will discuss two places (a country and a commonwealth) that our president has recently demeaned. Our guests are April Knutson, professor in the Master of Liberal Studies Program at the University of Minnesota and a Haiti advocate, and DFL State Senator Melisa Franzen, a member of the Puerto Rican–American community who is active in hurricane relief efforts.

TTT1750 December 11 Human Rights

Almost one year into the Trump presidency, hostile tweets, negative court decisions, and a sharp uptick in deportations signal hard times for immigrants and refugees. All across Minnesota, however, citizens are sending a message of tolerance and resistance. At issue is not only the fate of those under attack, but the kind of society we want to build. Joining TruthToTell are leaders of two organizations committed to human rights and greater public understanding of Minnesota’s immigrant and refugee communities: • Michelle Garrett McKenzie, deputy director and director of advocacy for the Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights • Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)

TTT1737 September 11 Dreamers-DACA

President Trump’s decision to repeal the DACA program sent waves of consternation throughout the immigrant community and its supporters. But all may not be lost. In fact, support for Congressional action to bring legal status to the Dreamers may be wider that we think. TTT discusses DACA and immigration reform more broadly with Amy Koch, former State Senate Majority Leader, and Bill Blazar, senior vice-president of public affairs and business development for the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce.
